The Municipality of Shelburne Council at its’ Council meeting held December 9th unanimously agreed to send a letter to the Minister of Lands and Forestry, Minister Ian Rankin, requesting the Province of Nova Scotia delay any further harvest proposals until the Lahey Report an “Independent Review of Forest Practices in Nova Scotia”, is fully implemented.
“Council supports the forest industry and understands its importance to the economy of Shelburne County. We also support protecting the environment. The request is simply asking the Province to wait until they implement the recommendations in the Lahey Report, which they have stated they support”, says Warden Penny Smith.
The Town of Lockeport and the Town of Shelburne also made similar motions to send a letter to the Province requesting the full implementation of the Report.
