The GTF supports environmentally sustainable municipal infrastructure projects that contribute to cleaner air, cleaner water and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The Fund provides predictable and long-term infrastructure money to Canada's cities and towns.

Eligible investment categories include:

  • Public Transit
  • Drinking Water
  • Wastewater Infrastructure
  • Green Energy
  • Solid Waste Management
  • Local Roads and Bridges

Municipalities can pool, bank and borrow against this funding, providing significant additional financial flexibility. To ensure accountability to Canadians, communities report on their use of the funds' activities on an annual basis.

A new Gas Tax Funding agreement is being prepared by the Province for 2010 - 2015 and Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations have released some information regarding changes and additions in the new agreement, which will extend Gas Tax Funding to the 2014/15 fiscal year.  Changes have been made to project categories to explicitly include climate change adaption measures for water and waste water systems, and a new project category entitled Climate Change has been added.  Climate change planning has also been added as an eligible capacity building activity.  Requirements of the new agreement include an ICSP Implementation Progress Report by December 31, 2013 and the addition to the ICSP of a Municipal Climate Change Action Plan (MCCAP), also by December 31, 2013.

Staff are integrating these requirements into the existing ICSP Implementation Plan to ensure the Municipality will have appropriate measures and documentation in place to meet these requirements in a timely fashion.
