The Municipality of Shelburne’s budget continues to provide for future growth, investment in economic development and fiscal stability while maintaining the tax rate set a year ago.

At its June meeting, Council for the Municipality of the District of Shelburne, passed its annual budget. Despite revenue pressures, Council passed a balanced budget while increasing investments in economic development.

Key points included in the new budget for the Municipality of the District of Shelburne:

  • Municipal tax rates maintained at $1.30 (residential and resource) and $1.82 (commercial) per $100 of assessment
  • Council has set aside $2.5 million for economic and environmental development by utilizing $ 207,000 in reserves with most of the balance coming from third party funding.

The residential tax burden continues to be a concern for Council. The Municipality of the District of Shelburne has one of the lowest rates of commercial activity, relative to other rural municipalities in Nova Scotia. In an effort to improve the attractiveness of the industrial park, the Municipality plans to build a new sewage treatment plant and install new lines in the park. Council is also prepared to invest in refurbishments to the medical clinic and continue to be involved in the attempts to attract more physicians to the area. Council continues to work diligently toward greater economic opportunity to not only reduce the residential tax burden, but to create jobs and economic growth for the residents of the municipality.
