The Municipality of the District of Shelburne continues to provide for future growth with investment in economic development and maintaining fiscal stability.

Council for the Municipality of the District of Shelburne passed the annual budget at its June meeting.  While the pressures on the finances of the Municipality continue to grow, Council was able to reduce the residential and resource tax rate by two cents this year.

Key points in the new budget are as follows.

  • Municipal tax rates have been set at $1.28 (residential and resource) and $1.82 (commercial) per $100 of assessment.
  • Council has set aside $2.6 million for economic and environmental development by utilizing $705,000 in reserves with most of the balance coming from alternate funding sources.

Council continues to be concerned over the rate charged to the residential tax payers.  As can be seen from the table below, one third of the residential rate is caused by the cost of services imposed on the Municipality by other levels of government.  In an effort to increase the amount of commercial activity, Council continues to work towards the development of the industrial park.
