Newsletter: District Seven Councillor: November 2007
Councillor Embree would like to share coffee, tea, muffins, buns and doughnuts with you on Saturday November 17 at 9AM at the Sable River Community Hall for an hour or two to discuss municipal issues. Please join me.
The principle issues in front of councilors at this time are: our economic development (particularly the sale of CFS Shelburne), our relationship with the regional development authority, and our internal governance (particularly the hiring of our next Chief Administrative Officer).
The Municipality has changed its form of government to a Chief Administrative Officer managed administration. Council provides the strategic direction, policy, and budget within which the CAO manages the administration and services to our community. We have hired a temporary CAO on a short-term contract. A CAO Hiring committee has been formed and a professional executive hiring firm has been contracted to find a good replacement in 2008. The advertisement for a new CAO is on the municipal website. Do you know someone who could do this job? Tell them and us.
The Warden is available for personal visits about municipal issues in her office at the municipal building on Wednesday afternoons. If you don’t get the answer you want from your councilor or want to speak separately to her, do not hesitate to visit her at the municipal offices or call her at 875-3544 (ext 235) or her home phone at 874-4496.
May I suggest that you buy local this Christmas. There are many shops, crafts by local artisans, and Christmas tree lots that would appreciate your business. There is also the newly released book “Tale of Two Rivers: Sable River Stories and Tom Tigney Tales” available from the Lockeport Drug store, the Whirligig Bookstore in Shelburne or from Bessie Robart in Sable River. Buying locally means your money stays in the local area supporting local businesses, families and community.
The NS Seniors’ Secretariat has established a Seniors Abuse Awareness Campaign. Senior abuse is any action or inaction that threatens the health or well being of an older adult. Abuse can happen to anyone…. regardless of age, gender, living arrangements, health, ability, sexual orientation, financial status, education or culture. Who should you call for help? Call the Senior Abuse Line at 1-877-833-3377 for information or to talk about a situation of abuse. Your call will be kept confidential. Call the police at 911 for emergencies only. Abuse may be a crime or fall under the criminal code.
Your council has been advocating on your behalf for improvements to Highway 103 in the Municipality. It was wonderful to see the Department of Transport highway survey team on Highway 103 at Port L’Hébert Hill and Granite Village for several days during October. Representatives of DOTPW have indicated that this is initial work to straighten the curves in the road at the Shelburne / Queen’s County line, examine the addition of a passing lane on the hill and perhaps consider the dangerous condition of the eastbound lane at the top of the hill. It is many years from survey to work done but at least this is a hopeful starting sign of progress on improving highway 103 in our area.
Also on Highway 103 in Sable River there are two new non-regulatory signs requesting truck traffic to please not use Engine Brakes. We’ll see if they have any courtesy effect.
If anyone is interested in the traffic counts of cars, multiple axle and trailered vehicles and time of day traffic on some of our roads please contact me. Data from August 2006 is available for Canada Hill, East Sable, Rockland, Little Harbour Rd east of Rockland, Hwy 3 in Sable River, Hwy 103 at eastern county line, Hwy 203 just north of the Welshtown Rd, Hwy 3 near Hayden Rd, Jordan Ferry Rd, and Sandy Point Rd.
After a request from the landowner, the intervention of Canada Post and discussion among the residents, the post box on Osborne Road has been moved a short distance from its previous location to a location that should be suitable for everyone. Very many thanks to Gene Hayden for identifying the new location and for its use.
Finally with a sincere heart I wish everyone a safe and good lobster season and a very Merry Christmas.
In conclusion: I am interested in what you have to say, call me with your comments on municipal issues. I’m at 656-2793 or call the municipal offices at 875-3544 ext 221. I live at 1784 East Sable River Road if you wish to stop by. I’m also available at scembree@auracom.com. Our municipal website is being revised and updated and is well worth a look at www.municipalityofshelburne.ca
Please join me at the Sable River Community Hall on Saturday November 17 at 9AM for an hour or two to discuss municipal issues.
Yours respectfully,
Sherm Embree,
